My Best Golf Swing

December 14th, 2009 David No comments

Today you’re going to discover how I turned my game completely around.

How I changed my ugly golf swing into the best golf swing in the club. Well maybe that’s a little exaggerated but I can definitely say it is the most improved golf swing in the club.

I used to walk up to the tee and take a couple of practice swings which felt perfect. They were relaxed, the head of the club just brushing the grass and I could imagine the ball rising straight down the center of the fairway towards the pin.

But the second I addressed the ball and I started to feel awkward. Almost like panic is setting in. Negative thoughts running through my head. Then… rushing the stroke and watching resignedly as the ball was duffed a few yards off the tee, or if my contact was better slicing around into the rough.

How things have changed…

I now approach the tee with confidence… rather than dread. And I have wiped the patronizing smiles off the faces of my playing partners.

Even better. For the first time in my golfing life I can get around our course consistently better than 80. I used to struggle before to break 100.

In my previous post (below) I talked about the importance of the mental game. Stopping what I call “self-interference”. That little voice in your head that tells you to drop down a couple of clubs and play safe. Or to play around the lake rather than over it.  I think it was Henry Ford who said, “Whether You Think You Can or Can’t, You’re Right”.

But even more important than the mental aspect is to fix your golf swing.

You must go back to basics and eradicate all of those nasty little habits and workarounds that we all pick up during our golfing life. Bits of routines and styles picked up from books, magazines and videos that have all contributed to your swing.

It only took me a couple of hours to learn the techniques I will show you. Within two weeks of practicing my new swing I knocked around 20 strokes off my game! I went from an average game of around 100 to around 80. Now I was exceptionally bad and very few people could expect results quite as dramatic as that. But you should be able to get your score consistently below 80 using these simple techniques.

I really hope you make the decision to rebuild your golf swing just like I did. You will never look back.

The Perfect Golf Swing

December 13th, 2009 David No comments

I guess all golfers would like the perfect golf swing. But for most of us this is unattainable. We are the wrong shape or just not flexible enough to get our bodies to conform to the shape of swing that would be considered perfect.

What we are really looking for is a simple, basic swing that is repeatable. Time after time in any circumstances we find ourselves in.

When I was pistol shooting competitively I asked a National Coach how to shoot 100 – the perfect score.

He said, “It’s simple. Just learn to shoot a single perfect 10…  and then repeat the above”.

At a certain stage of training, our bodies have learned everything needed to make a perfect shot. True of golf and of shooting. What stops us making a perfect shot or a perfect stroke is the interference of our conscious brain. The non-stop chatter that goes through our brain.

If you’re interested in the psychology behind this, I recommend you get hold of a book by Lanny Bassam, who was an American Olympic Gold Medal Winner. You can get hold of the book on for just a few bucks. The link will take you straight to the book and is not an affiliate link, I make nothing out of a sale. The book is called, “With Winning In Mind” and I credit the teachings to a perfect 100 I shot during a national competition.

Although this is written by a rifle shooter, he talks mostly about golf. The subject matter is equally relevant to most sports where you have to take a shot (golf, shooting, archery, kicking a goal, serving at tennis and even ten pin bowling).

Some psychologists believe that golf (and the other sports) is 90% a mental process and this book will help you.

However, this is not the full story. Before we can benefit from the physiological tricks the book will teach you, we need to work on developing the basic, simple swing I talked about at the beginning of this post.

This can be achieved in as little as a couple of weeks and I will tell you exactly how to do this in my next post.

Best Golf Swing

December 10th, 2009 David No comments

This is the story of how I set about rebuilding my awful golf swing. Even the golf pro’s have to do it from time to time. But they have the benefit of a bit bigger budget than me!

If you’re anything like me you have, at some time or other, blamed your kit. I convinced myself that the latest Ping, or Taylor Made clubs would transform me into another Ernie Els. Who, incidentally is my favorite golfer.

I was easily sold the idea of having them customized at the Pro Shop. Which did make a big difference but would have been even better if I had waited for my new swing before I had them fitted.

I also have a garage full of golf training aids, laser trainers, rescue clubs and on and on.

And guess what? It doesn’t finish there, I get two golfing magazines every month. I have a library of books, videos and dvd’s, all bought with the intention of helping me improve my game.

I have had a number of lessons from Pro’s at my club on the driving range. For a time I improve but it never lasts.

The problem is, when I address the ball at the start of the game I’ve just got too much going on in my head!

But the harder I try the worst it gets. I just put too much pressure on myself .

Both my playing partners are quite a bit younger than me, quite athletic and we’re all very competitive (it’s a Williams gene). I want to beat them, or at least give them a good game.

I’m not one to show my emotions but inside I was really ticked off. I was determined to find a solution.

Over the coming posts I will tell you how the story unfolded.
